Hiện nay, rào cản kỹ thuật đã được các nước nhập khẩu dựng lên, đặc biệt là vấn đề truy xuất nguồn gốc, do đó, gạo Việt cần thay đổi quy trình sản xuất.
Các chuyên gia cho rằng, dù gạo Việt đã có mặt ở 150 quốc gia và vùng lãnh thổ, nhìn chung đời sống của khoảng 9 triệu nông hộ vẫn chưa thực sự khởi sắc. Nguyên nhân là do ngành hàng này có nhiều hạn chế như: chạy theo sản lượng, chưa chú trọng cải thiện chất lượng, chưa nâng cao giá trị gia tăng và hiệu quả xuất khẩu.
Trong những năm gần đây, diện tích gieo trồng các nhóm giống lúa thơm, đặc sản và giống lúa chất lượng cao liên tục gia tăng và giảm dần các nhóm lúa chất lượng trung bình, thấp. Tuy nhiên, diện tích sản xuất theo quy trình canh tác hữu cơ còn quá ít và chưa có quy hoạch vùng nguyên liệu cho từng nhóm giống theo tiểu vùng sinh thái. Đó cũng là lý do khiến giá trị hạt gạo Việt Nam thấp so với Thái Lan, Ấn Độ hay Campuchia. Theo các chuyên gia, hạ giá thành từ khâu sản xuất chính là giải pháp.
Điểm đáng quan tâm là trong tình hình khó khăn chung, cơ cấu xuất khẩu đã có sự thay đổi để tìm kiếm thị trường mới, nổi bật là gạo trắng chất lượng cao đã tăng lên 40%, gạo thơm tăng 30%. Đây là những dòng gạo là thế mạnh của Việt Nam, đủ sức cạnh tranh trong việc xuất khẩu.
